Purpose + Success criteria

Purpose of a  Music promo video- Is  to promto the song, Change the image of an artist as well as Changes the image of the song.

Music Promo Video do the following things:

  • Draws attention to the music video/song. An example of this is the Lady Gaga-Telephone video... a lot of things is going on in the video which drags the video and makes it a very long one.>>>>>>>>>>>>
  • Illustrates the song- So people have a wider image of what the video is about
  • Tells a story- For example; Bronski (smalltown boy) and George Michael (Outside).
  • ¬¬¬¬

This George Michael was more about Public affection in the sense that people in the video werent bothered about what the society and people around tehm thought. So people were getting intimate outside but ideally people would usually be like that around one another indoors. The whole purpose of george michael doing this is the fact that hes coming out about himself and actually telling people who he is and hpw he's homosexual basically, which is why this video is very Significant
    • Expresses an individuals emotion. For example; Sinead o connor- Nothing compares to you. This video emphasises the pain Sinead is goiing through and all the emotions shes goiing through due to the death of her mother. The camera is so close to her fae that you could clearly see the tears dropping down her cheeks. This makes the video even more powerful even though it wasnt intentional.
  • Markets an image change
An example of Marketting an image change would be Christina aguilera with her video- Dirrty as as well as Madonna video- Vogue.
From innocent loving christina aguilera at the Mickey mouse clubhouse...
To party animal, naughty, rebellious christina aguilera.....
Christina Aguileras sudden image change caused a lot of controversy as people didnt expect someone like her to come out with such wild video. However for her, she went that far just to show people her real self and how she really is.Normal girl who loves to party and have a crazy time.

In terms of madonna, shes similar too. In all her music videos shes always changed her image. If it wasnt for the number of image changes in her videos, she wouldnt have been as successful as sheis because she wasnt particularly a good singer. An example video would be >>>

  • Promotes the artist/Single/Album
  • Persuades audience to buy- CD/Download. E.g, Eminem-Stan
  • Raises the audience awareness or profile of the artist/ group. For example; So solid- 21sec  >>>>
  • To make an artistic statement-e.g, Talking heads (once in a lifetime) and True faith- New order)
  • Product placement- Christine Aguilera& perfume (Not myself tonight).

How might we measure the success criteria of a music promo video?

  • Word of mouth
  • Number of hits on youtube e.g, psy-Gangnam style, Numa Numa
This video had a massive amount of hits on youtube. This was because despite the fact that it was sung in a foreign language which many do not understand, it was the music video and the choreography in it that stood out to people which made it very successful.(psy-Gangnam style)
This was the first video posted on the internet and this specific video spread around the world simply because its ironic and very enjoyable.(Numa Numa).

  • Newspaper articles/tv reports
  • How many times shown on television
  • Amount of publicity- Sometimes a music can have a massive amount of views on youtube simply because its just not very good. This can be known as Negative publicity. An example of this is the music video Rebecca Black- Friday night.
  • Downloads- illegal/legal
  • Charts
  • CD sales
  • Last word
  • It is worth nothing how there has been a massive switch in the importance of youtube from television channels such as; Mtv
  • Most viewing of music videos now appears to be online
  • Vma awards

Ideas for music video

At first i was thinking of doing an afro beat music video with a lot of choreography like this;
But however, adding choregraphy to a music video is harder than it looks and apparently, past students werent too successful at doing this either because not only do you have lipsing (which isnt done in this video by the way) but however, you also have to get the timing right and the dancers in your all have to be doing thesame thing at the same time.

Editing to the beat.. Process

At the beginning of this task my confidence in terms of using final cut express was very low but with a little play around with it, its beginning it get a lot clearer and straightforward. Although the task was editing to the beat but however watching the 5secs into the video, the image did not quite match the beat and i suppose that would be a lesson to take on when making my final Music video. During this task i also learnt how to split the screens up into sections and i believe this is a powerful type of edit that i might apply into my music video. Furthermore, during this task, i learnt to cut bit of the clips away which i never knew before. Finally i also learnt how to make a character in the video automatically zoom in (the tiger).

AFTER Finishing the video i just taught that i should try something different and give the video a good finish so i added some text. This was difficult to work around so first because the writing was either too big or at times, it just couldn't fit a page. The solution to this was to basically place each word or 2 on each line and then as a result the final cut express program will be able to spot how you want the writings to fit the screen.

Basically in order for the sound to work properly we had to make a couple of changes which included; changing the sound format to AAC, and the channels to MONO. Following this , i had to name the file something i would be able to remember.

This was the beginning of the exportation process. This leads to uploading your video to youtube

This was when i was adjusting the text in order for it to fit the screen properly.

Information about Copyright

According to my research on wikipedia....

Copyright is a legal concept, enacted by most governments, giving the creator of an original work exclusive rights to it, usually for a limited time. Generally, it is "the right to copy", but also gives the copyright holder the right to be credited for the work, to determine who may adapt the work to other forms, who may perform the work, who may financially benefit from it, and other related rights. It is a form of intellectual property (like the patent, the trademark, and the trade secret) applicable to any expressible form of an idea or information that is substantive and discrete.[clarification needed][1]

Copyright initially was conceived as a way for government to restrict printing; the contemporary intent of copyright is to promote the creation of new works by giving authors control of and profit from them. Copyrights are said to be territorial, which means that they do not extend beyond the territory of a specific state unless that state is a party to an international agreement. Today, however, this is less relevant since most countries are parties to at least one such agreement. While many aspects of national copyright laws have been standardized through international copyright agreements, copyright laws of most countries have some unique features.[2] Typically, the duration of copyright is the whole life of the creator plus fifty to a hundred years from the creator's death, or a finite period for anonymous or corporate creations. Some jurisdictions have required formalities to establishing copyright, but most recognize copyright in any completed work, without formal registration. Generally, copyright is enforced as a civil matter, though some jurisdictions do apply criminal sanctions.

Most jurisdictions recognize copyright limitations, allowing "fair" exceptions to the creator's exclusivity of copyright, and giving users certain rights. The development of digital media and computer network technologies have prompted reinterpretation of these exceptions, introduced new difficulties in enforcing copyright, and inspired additional challenges to copyright law's philosophic basis. Simultaneously, businesses with great economic dependence upon copyright have advocated the extension and expansion of their intellectual property rights, and sought additional legal and technological enforcement.

In addition to this, the consequences of breaching the law and not getting permission to use a copyright material includes getting prosecuted and getting fined depending on what the music owner wants to do. In my case, i will need to ask for permission as well as receive some sort of permission email to use the song i request for by the music owner except from if the songs isn't copyright. If i fail get permission from whichever artist i choose and end up posting my final video on youtube, then the consequence might be that my music promo video might get removed from youtube.

My favourite Music video

My favourite music video of all time as well my favourite artist is Beyonce simply because her videos are well thought about and its made to interest a large varied audience from young to old. The fact that she includes a lot of choreography also makes her music promo videos attract a lot of audience making them eager to see the next music she is going to come out with.
