Emil Nava Case Study

In lesson today, we went through Emil Nava's case study.

Case study2
  • Began as a runner for film production companies
  • Worked for Blink productions
  • Now freelances for OB management
  • After working as a runner graduated to assistant director where he would manage video shoots
  • He signed to academy- who are the biggest music video production company
  • Then worked for between the eyes and now worksmainly for pulse
  • Has now begun to make adverts , which generally have a far higher budget and production values but which allow for less creative freedom. He decided to direct adverts like this (see below) simply because he wanted to enhance is career status and make people aware of the videos he directed.

  • At his busiest, Emil has made 24 music videos in one year.
  • When he began shooting videos for independent labels the budget would be as low as £5,000 - £10,000.
  • His most expensive video to date has been for the artist Jessie J and the budget for the film was £160,000.

  • Emil's first budget was for the band Kid British and their track Our House
    • The budget for that music video was £20,000
    • The location was set in Manchester
    • The cast involved local people
    • 1 day for the filming
    • 2/3 days for the editing
    • 10 days pre-planning
    • demonstrates the very tight timescale involved.

    OB Management work as agents for music videos directors and their aim is to simply;

    • Nurture talent
    • Work with production companies
    • Work with record labels
    • Match the right director to the right artists
Some of the production companies that OB work with are :
    • Pulse films
    • Rocket
    • Agile Films
    • Friends
    • Wonda

    Preliminary Vid Production phase/ Evaluation

Production phase-  During the preliminary task we have learnt a lot about filming . We have learnt about filming a variety of shots such as long shots and close/extreme close ups and their significance in a Music video. From experience we also learnt that its better to film away from the light or otherwise the footage taken would look blurry on camera. During this preliminary, it was the first time as a group to use an HD camera so we had to be given brief instructions before using it. As we went off to carry out the task. The most difficult bit was trying to learn the verse few verses of the lyrics as well as trying to lip sync to the music as it was playing in the background. However it was harder than expected and we didnt quite get it right in the first feww takes but after several takes, the result was decent and with learnt a lot through the process in which we could hang onto and use as a guidance for our original music video.

After the whole filming process we had to edit the footage and while editing we had to make sure that we had an mp3 copy of the music we lip syched to  and then put it up on the timeline ready to edit with but at the same time we had to ensure that it was padlocked so that when editing we wouldnt accidently mess the sound around. Inconclusion, i believe that the preliminary task was not only successful but however it was also very valuable as it made the group realise a lot of things in which we could learn from and watchout for on our final music video. The preliminary task also made us realise the standard thats expected on the final piece and that a lot effort will have to be put in. Most importantly, for next time i and the group have learnt that its really important to look up at the camera instead of looking down at the camera when singing. We have also learnt that as an artist and depending on your genre of music you have to be enthusiastic/ go with the mood of your lyrics in order for the music video to be successful and for the audience to enjoy it and be able to relate to it.

Editing preliminary Cont & Final Preliminary music video

Today we continued editing as usual determined to finish up the piece. Below are images to demonstrate some of the process we went through and the things we did to edit our music video...

These were all the different shots that had th be dragged down unto were it would be edited.

Some of the tools we had to use; e.g, to cut out bits of the video that we wanted to get rid of.

    Editing Preliminary....

Today we began to edit our preliminary music videos. At first it was quite a challenge personally as i didnt quite get the hang of the tools we had to use to edit the videos. But as a group we started to work it out bits by bits. So at first we uploaded the footage onto the computer and the we splitted the footage up in bits in order to make it a bit easier to edit^(as it can be seen above on the left handside of the screen). Then  we started to watch each footage to see if the lip syncing matched up with the song and we started to make necessary adjustments and so on.

    Case study-Jamie Thraves

    • Director- Jamie thraves
    • Made short films at university
    • Used award winning short videos as a ' Calling card' to get a ' Foot on the door' with the video production company factory films
    • Began by shooting three very low budget music videos- cost about £5,000
    How the whole process works;
    • A commissioner from a record label sends track to 5-10 directors
    • The directors then each submit a treatment
    • However, this stage is unpaid
    • The director who as submitted the best treatment is then exmmissioned to make the video
    • Only then is the director paid
As can be seen for many directors in the business it is a precausious existence where their livelihood is dependent on each commission. Jamie thraves submitted treatments for his two best known videos and each was accepted.

    Jamie thraves came up with two well known music video ideas are ;
    • Radiohead- Just. This video was made with a £100,000 budget and was shot in three days.

    • Coldplay- The Scientist. This video was made with a budget of £200,000 and was shot in three days.

Most recent videos- Japanese popstars- Song for lisa
      • Currently videos cost about £20,000
      • Shooting time- 2days
      • Jamie has used his music videos to get into film business
      • He has so far shot three features; The low down, the cry of the owl, Treacle jr.
      Jamie's tips on music videos
      • Use the lyrics but try not to be too literal
      • Most importantly- Go with the Emotion of the lyrics

      Preliminary Duet

In lesson today we had to do our preliminary task which involved being in groups and singing a duet to Elvis priestly- Dont go breaking my heart. It was a very hard task has we had to lip synch and yet most of us didn't know the lyrics to it.
